The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
