This Academy Award-nominated actor Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
This actress, whose credits included Chinatown, died at her home in Ojai, California. Her passing was revealed through a message by her offspring, award-winning actress Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who appeared with her mother in various films like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my wonderful hero as well as my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was by her side during her final moments.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist as well as empathetic spirit that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were fortunate to know her. She is flying with her angels now.”
The start of her career included small roles on television series like Perry Mason whereas the seventies featured her performing with Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
In the same year, the year 1974, she performed with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting landed Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.
During the eighties, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow plus comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a television series derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the following decade, she earned an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she played the mom of her biological child Dern’s character. The next year she obtained another nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose that also featured Laura Dern.
“This was the picture which Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she invited us to London for a special screening and a party in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, taking our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”
The nineties included parts in humorous films Cemetery Club bringing her back with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, starring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Dern’s mother again. Those years also earned her Emmy nominations for performances in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
She kept appearing with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and Mike White’s dark comedy series Enlightened. She was also seen next to actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her more recent television parts consisted of the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.
She also authored and oversaw the humorous movie Mrs Munck, a film that included herself and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she said. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. In fact, I’m the only woman ever who directed her former husband. I often joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ However, I’m joking.”
She was additionally a family member of the great Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact throughout my life”.
Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and informed her life expectancy was six months but she regained full health after her daughter moved her to a different hospital.
“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, instead apply it to explore, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd remarked.
