No Fewer Than Six Perish in Stampede at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Drive

At least six people have died during a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in Ghana.

The midweek "tragic" event appeared to have been caused by "a sudden rush of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," announced a release from Ghana's armed forces.

Twenty-two others were injured, including five who remain in critical condition.

A large crowd had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, Accra, with the hope of enlisting in the military.

The country has a youth unemployment rate of approximately 32%, the latest government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events typically attract large crowds and often result in chaotic scenes.

The closing date to apply for this recruitment was prolonged for a week to accommodate more applicants, as some had experienced challenges in the process.

Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede took place ahead of the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

The nation's leader John Mahama has gone to see the injured in hospital.

Order has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has since begun.
