The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
