The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
