President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that he has asked the relatives of a Guard member fatally shot last week to visit the White House.
He noted that he contacted her parents and they were “devastated”.
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was lost her life in a violent incident on Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her fellow service member, Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Gatherings across West Virginia have been held in their memory.
The president explained he’s discussed a White House visit for the families of both individuals of the state Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, visit the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to her,” Trump addressed journalists. “And similarly with Andrew, whether he recovers or not.”
Mourners gathered over the weekend at Webster County high school in the state to remember Sarah.
Both the soldiers had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of the president’s federal initiative to support policing efforts in the capital.
“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers desired. She carried herself with calm resilience, a contagious smile and a upbeat demeanor that encouraged people around her,” Hankins, the leader of her former high school, told the Associated Press. “She was kind, considerate and always ready to support those in need.”
Funeral plans for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Law enforcement have charged a 29-year-old individual from Afghanistan with one count of murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.
The tragedy led the government to suspend refugee claims and temporarily stop issuing entry permits to holders of passports from Afghanistan.
Wolfe, a resident of Martinsburg, began his service in February 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman High, per the Associated Press.
He continues to receive treatment and is “fighting for his life”, West Virginia leader Patrick Morrisey said on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
The state’s top lawyer Bondi stated on a news show that she also intended to visit his relatives.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County high school in June 2023 and joined the military shortly after, working as a military police officer with excellence, as stated by the state guard.
“She had a lot of compassion and she definitely had courage,” the governor addressed the gathering at the memorial. “Though her life ended too soon, she has made an impact that’s going to last forever.”
