Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.

In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Agenda Focused On Security and Migration

Noted for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily focused on promises to tackle growing violence and drastically reduce migration.

He frequently blamed immigrants, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.

His proposals featured controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, electric fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost border.

Within a Continental Wave

Many analysts interpret Kast's win as part of a wider conservative wave in South America, coming after this year's political results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other experts further describe it as a continuation of the established rotation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Clear Mandate

Despite his decisive electoral triumph, Kast does not hold an overall majority in Congress, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all conservative parties are combined together.

This legislative landscape may complicate his policy goals, including a promise to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not offered concrete steps.

"We have several things about what a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," commented a political analyst.

The professor added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right. But where there is considerably less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
